A boiler care plan is worth it if you want your annual service done without thinking about it and prefer a predictable monthly cost to a surprise repair bill in the middle of winter. It suits older boilers, busy households and landlords best. If your boiler is new and still under a manufacturer’s warranty, the value is lower, though you’ll still need a yearly service to keep that warranty valid. Our care plans page explains what we offer, and we cover homes from Trowbridge to Melksham and beyond.
What a boiler care plan usually includes
Plans vary a lot between providers, so always read the details. Most combine some or all of these:
- An annual boiler service, booked for you each year
- Help when the boiler breaks down, sometimes with priority booking
- Some labour and parts costs covered, up to set limits
- Cover for the wider heating system, such as controls, pumps and radiators, on higher tiers
Some plans cover the boiler only. Others include the whole system. The cheapest plans may only cover the service and a reduced labour rate.
Who gets the most value from a plan
Owners of boilers outside warranty
Once a boiler is past its warranty, any part that fails is your cost. Pumps, fans, diverter valves and PCBs can all go wrong as a boiler ages. A plan spreads that risk over the year.
People who forget the annual service
A missed service is one of the most common reasons boilers struggle in winter. With a plan, the reminder and booking are taken care of. That alone makes it worthwhile for plenty of households.
Landlords
Rented homes need a gas safety check every 12 months, and tenants expect heating to be fixed quickly. A plan can make both easier to manage. Our landlord gas safety page covers the certificate side.
Households who’d struggle with a sudden bill
If an unexpected repair would be a real problem in December, a fixed monthly cost gives you a buffer.
When paying as you go might suit you better
A plan may not be the best choice if:
- Your boiler is new and still under a long manufacturer’s warranty that already covers parts and labour
- You’re happy to book and pay for the service yourself each year
- Your boiler is very old and due for replacement soon, as some plans exclude older models or limit cover on them
In these cases, a yearly boiler service on its own may be all you need.
Questions to ask before you sign up
- Is the annual service included?
- Which parts are covered, and are there any limits on the cost of a repair?
- Is the whole heating system included, or the boiler only?
- Are older boilers or certain makes excluded?
- Is there an excess or call-out charge?
- What happens if the boiler can’t be repaired?
- Can I cancel, and is there a minimum term?
Getting clear answers now saves a frustrating conversation when the heating stops on a cold night.
Care plans for homes in Trowbridge, Melksham and nearby
Across West Wiltshire you’ll find everything from new-build estates with modern combis to stone cottages and farmhouses running older oil boilers. Older systems in period homes around Melksham and Bradford on Avon tend to benefit most from regular servicing and cover, while newer homes may only need a plan once the warranty ends. Whatever you have, it’s worth sorting before the coldest weeks arrive and engineers get busiest.
What a plan doesn’t replace
A care plan doesn’t remove the need to keep an eye on things yourself. Check the boiler pressure gauge now and then, bleed radiators that are cold at the top and test your carbon monoxide alarm. Anything inside the boiler, the gas supply or the flue is a job for a Gas Safe registered engineer, or an OFTEC registered engineer for oil. If you ever smell gas, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.
Frequently asked questions
Does a boiler care plan include the annual service?
Many do, but not all. Some cheaper breakdown-only plans leave the service out, while others make it the centre of the plan. Check before you sign up, because the annual service is what keeps most boilers reliable and is usually needed to keep a manufacturer’s warranty valid.
Is a care plan the same as boiler insurance?
They overlap but aren’t always the same. Insurance-style cover pays for repairs when things go wrong. A care plan from a local engineer is usually built around regular servicing with help when the boiler breaks down. Read the terms to see what’s covered, what’s excluded and who carries out the work.
Can I get a care plan for an oil boiler?
Some providers cover gas only, while others include oil and LPG boilers. If you’re off the gas grid, ask specifically whether your boiler type is included and whether the service is carried out by an OFTEC registered engineer. Our care plans page explains what we offer.
